The Story Behind the Image:

In April of 2015 I was on assignment in Panama to photograph the Panama canal through an abstract and artistic lens. I had the pleasure of seeing the canal from above by flying in a tiny two man Robinson R22 helicopter, with the doors off, strapped in only by a rusty and fraying seatbelt. As the pilot and I skimmed the tops of the lush rainforest trees, we flew side by side with exotic birds, watched shipping containers chug their way slowly through the historic Panama canal, and took in the canal from a perspective that felt truly unique. The vast rainforest that surrounds the canal is dense, endless, and largely untouched by man except for the cut of the canal through its belly. Many side channels, lakes, and streams branch off the main vain of the canal forming a vast wetland rich in wildlife that few humans ever see. As we followed one of the side channels, hovering a mere 50ft off the ground, the pilot spotted this crocodile. It slithered gracefully through the murky pastel green water leaving a small wake in its trail. I was enchanted by the fact that such a fierce creature could look so elegant and graceful from above, surrounded by an abstract and muted pastel color pallet. The crocodile was in our view plane for a brief thirty seconds before plunging back into the unseen depths below.
